Roadmapping became quite popular in the USA in the late 1990’s, and more recently in Europe, especially in terms of technology roadmaps, as an approach to strategic planning for the future of technology in different sectors. However, a common definition for roadmapping or roadmap does not exist, and an observation of roadmaps that have been created so far indicates that there is considerable diversity among practitioners as to what constitutes a roadmap and the roadmapping techniques employed.
